An impressive 40 entries have been received for tomorrow’s (Saturday, August 17) Summer Nights Tarmac Sprint, including all the leading challengers in the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Virgin Atlantic Driver’s and Class Championships. The battle for points resumes after a seven-week break, with four rounds to go.
The popular Hangman’s Hill to Lion Castle stage, which offers competitors their last chance to score points on tarmac in the 2013 Virgin Atlantic Championship, is expected to attract a significant turn-out of spectators, who have limited opportunities to see night-time competition.
Conor Roach (Clubman Peugeot 106) and Rhett Watson (SuperModified 12 BMW M3) are the joint leaders in the overall title chase, based on class results, with 105 points each (scored from a possible maximum of 108); drivers will count their nine best scores at year-end. Group N leader Geoff Noel (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) is third on 102 points, with Josh Read (SM10 Toyota Starlet) fourth on 96.
Tied in fifth place, each with 92, are Andrew Jones (SM11 Ford Escort MkII), Roger Skeete (WRC-1 Subaru Impreza WRC S12) and Ian Warren (SM10 Suzuki Swift), while the top 10 is completed by WRC-2 class leader Roger Hill (Toyota Corolla WRC) with 88, Andrew Mallalieu, whose 87 points place him second in Group N in his Subaru Impreza N10, and Modified 7 leader Edward Corbin (Toyota Corolla RunX), who has 76.
Competitors are due at the Service Park in Hopewell Plantation Yard by 5.00pm for scrutineering, with the start slated for 6.30pm. The Summer Nights Tarmac Sprint, which is also a round of the Motoring Club of Barbados Inc’s (MCBI) annual championship, will run to the usual speed event format, with one practice run followed by three official runs.
