Edward Corbin finally celebrates Champion Driver title

More than 80 competitors and volunteers, representing both sides of the island’s motor sport community, were recognised for their achievements and commitment to the sport at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prizegiving at Bentley Manor House, St Philip, on Saturday (February 1). After a number of near-misses, Edward Corbin finally claimed the Champion Driver title, emerging as one of the night’s big winners, also taking the Modified 1 and 2wd Championship trophies.

During a short address, Chairman Mark Hamilton said: “By any measure, 2019 was a positive year. Class and overall title battles went down to the wire and I congratulate all the winners. To our volunteers, marshals, officials and the unseen people who operate in the shadows, so to speak, I offer a sincere thank-you on behalf of the Club, its Committee and its members. Your on-going support is critical to the Club’s and the sport’s success and, while I acknowledge that we have some challenges with volunteer numbers, I am hopeful that we can address this in the coming year. I urge everyone in this room to give some thought to how we can bring the volunteer numbers up.”

As before, the prize list included a number of regional drivers, including the Turks & Caicos Rally Team’s Paul Horton, who was awarded with the Richard Roett Trophy in recognition of his long-term support of the Club’s events, including sponsorship of the 2019 H02 Construction Winter Rally; in his absence competing in Ireland, the trophy was accepted on his behalf by Trinidad & Tobago’s David Coelho. Coelho was also among the awardees, along with T&C’s Stan Hartling, respectively the FIA R5 and M3 Class Champions, while Jamaica’s Chris McFarlane is the BRC Autocross Champion for the fifth consecutive year, also winning back-to-back 4wd and 2wd class titles.

Over the year’s seven rounds, Corbin scored 130 points, four more than Clubman 2 Champion Ian Warren, back for his first full season since 2013. M4 and M2 Champions respectively, Roger Hill and Jamal Brathwaite each scored 118 points, the tie-break based on each driver’s highest overall finish giving Hill third place. Horton (112pts) and Stuart Garcia (107pts) completed the top six, while Dane Skeete was crowned 4wd Champion, despite failing to finish in the Overall top 10.

Marshals were recognised in four categories, Rookie, Most-improved, Long Service and Outstanding, each presented with trophies and more than half of them from the steadily growing number of lady marshals. Volunteers rewarded in the Long Service category were Cameron Greenidge, Charlie Kellman, Sherie Moore and Mark Waithe.

Leslie Evanson became the third different winner of the highest-placed Female Co-driver Award in as many seasons, following last year’s winner Nats Farnum and four-time recipient Lindsey Pilkington, while Clubman 1 Champion Jason Tull claimed the Rookie Award and a $1,000 Automotive Art Voucher. The Club’s annual tongue-in-cheek Golden Turkey Award, presented to acknowledge some lapse on the part of the competitor, was won by Mark Thompson, whose off-road excursion in Alexandria during the double-header sprint ended with his car on top of Mrs Babb’s perfectly manicured Bougainvillea hedge. After causing further damage as he drove off, Mrs Babb has been treated to a replacement hedge.

Leslie Alleyne won a record seventh consecutive Drivers crown in the Chefette MudDogs Safari Championship, with his Navigator Chris O’Neal winning a sixth title; Bridget Garity was crowned highest-placed female navigator, Yousuf Patel the Class B Champion Driver and Stephen Mayers and David Reece the winners of the Shelbury Construction Trophy which recognises success in the popular Driver Challenges.
